And I know that it wasn't about me... but last night I felt so old. Last night marked four years to the day since I'd graduated from high school. And looking at those kids I wonder if I looked that young and small and just pre when I graduated. And I suppose that I did. Teachers who's classes I'd spent so much time in and on. Teachers and faculty members who I thought that I'd over the course of my four-year tenure, built up a good relationship with did not recognize me. And when they did it was always with a look of shock. I heard, "You grew up to be so beautiful" and "You're so pretty now" so many times that I am convinced that I was an ugly duckling in high school... or at least, an odd duckling. And the coup de gras was being ogled by the male graduating seniors. I wanted to laugh so hard because had any of them seen me four years ago the only reason that they would have looked at me was to point and laugh. And they all looked so boyish. And it was such a contrast between their big little man voices and their still barely men bodies and attitudes. But my sister! So cute. And happy and graduated. There were balloons for her and money for her and countless pictures and gifts and I couldn't help but think that no one paid this much attention to me when I graduated. And then I felt bad and embarrassed by my selfishness. But mostly I was happy and proud and beaming. Like the sky. .
